Sony announced today that Playstation 5 will be backwards compatible with all but 11 games from the previous generation. Meaning all PS4 Yakuza titles, including Judgment, Ishin!, and Fist of the North Star, will be available to play on PS5 at launch!

On top of that PS5 owners can expect extra performance from most titles on the Playstation 5 (for select titles). This includes things like better framerate, faster loading speeds, and higher resolution:

What is the PS4 game experience like on PS5?
PS4 titles get even better on PS5. Select PS4 titles will see increased loading speeds on the PS5 console, and will also leverage Game Boost, offering improved or more stable frame rates. Some titles with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K may see higher fidelity. Additionally, PS4 games will also take advantage of some of PS5’s new UX features, but more to come on that later.

As far as save transfers go if you’d like to continue your adventure on PS5 it is possible to transfer using USB or Cloud Save Transfer with PS+ but compatibility will vary with cross generational titles and it’s up to the devs to decide if it’s possible.

How do PS4 game transfers and game saves work between the two consoles?
You can transfer digital games, game data, and game saves from a PS4 console to a PS5 console using LAN cables, or by connecting wirelessly (WiFi). If you’ve already stored PS4 games and game data in the external USB storage device connected to your PS4, you can bring them over to PS5 with that external USB storage device. And if you are a PS Plus member, you can also sync PS4 game saves on PS5 through cloud storage.

Please note that the ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision, and will vary title by title for cross-generational games.

One of the features missing that will directly impact Ryu Ga Gotoku 0 and Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin! is the ability to use the phone or Vita as a second screen (this functionality was already removed from the western version of the games) and the in game streaming from within the game will not work which means Ishin’s twitch integration for colosseum battles will likely no longer function. Not surprising as these are little known/used features anyway.

PS5 backwards compatibility limitations
In-Game Live from PlayStation is not supported on PS5 consoles.
PS5 consoles do not support the PS4 Second Screen app or game companion apps.

The list of PS4 exclusive titles are as follows:

  • DWVR
  • Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
  • TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • We Sing
  • Hitman Go: Definite Edition
  • Shadwen
  • Joe’s Diner

Despite these restrictions this is great news for Yakuza Fans looking to continue their quests when jumping over to PS5 or any one new to the series will be able to pick up all games for one platform right out of the box!
